Being born at a time when exploitation of race was still rampant in Russia, their family moved to America in order to escape the Jewish persecution they experienced in their home country in 1979. He completed his degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Maryland and pursued a doctorate degree in Computer Science at Stanford University where he met his Google co-founder, Larry Page. Fast forward to 2003, Brin married Anne Wojcicki with whom he had 2 children but shortly after they got a divorce, and in 2018; Brin re-married to Nicole Shahanan a lawyer and entrepreneur.

Google Beginning Stages

Google began as a research assignment between the two classmates, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the two played with the idea of developing a search engine that can list results according to the popularity of the web pages. They developed this technology from the dorm room of Larry Page and they named it, “Google”, after the mathematical term, “googol”, which is a 1 followed by a hundred zeroes. Their main goal was to organize the vast amount of information that is available on the internet and organizing them based on the web page’s popularity. Once they realized that they had a breakthrough and that their invention could potentially help a lot of people, they borrowed money from their friends and family in order to raise $1 million to launch Google on the internet in 1998. It instantly became a hit, many were amazed by the new technology. In 1999, Brin became the company’s president of technology and was the time Google received $25 million of venture capital funding, by this time the search engine was processing 500,000 queries per day. In 2004, Google issued its IPO (Initial Public Offering), many investors clamored to get an opportunity to invest in this rising technology, and as a result; Brin became a billionaire, with a net worth of $3.8 billion.

Google’s Continued Success

In 2006, Google acquired Youtube, the internet’s largest and the most popular site for user-submitted streaming videos, for about $1.65 billion in stock. This event showed everyone the company’s vision on expanding its services beyond just internet searches. What’s more, in 2012 they launched a futuristic technology called, “Google Glass”, which is a kind of wearable eyeglass computer that featured voice control, an LED illuminated display, and a camera. But, no matter how futuristic it may be, concerns about the purpose of its everyday usage led to its demise in the commercial market. However, its technology was used in the military and in the field of healthcare, as well as in the field of journalism. In August 2015, Google was reorganized to become a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., which is now Google’s parent company. Brin and Page withdrew from their positions in Google in order to serve as the Present and CEO of Alphabet. In December 2019 he left the post as president, although he continued to serve on Alphabet’s board of directors. With all the success that he received from his company, Brin is listed as number 9 in Forbes 400 2020 with a total net worth of $93.4 billion.
