Brief History and Early Beginnings

Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential African-American women of her century. She is someone who has had to deal with her fair share of obstacles and is a great inspiration for women everywhere. Oprah Winfrey is a TV Host, actress, producer and author. Oprah Winfrey was born in Mississippi on January 29th, 1954. She was ranked as the greatest black philanthropist in the history of the United States. Growing up wasn’t easy for Oprah, Her family was poor and she was raised as a single teenage mother. Oprah Winfrey has said that she was molested during her teen years meaning she was pregnant at the age of 14. Unfortunately, her son died prematurely. The obvious lack of money in her childhood is something that most children around the world have to deal with however at a young age she had to deal with losing her child and being molested. Fortunately for Oprah, she met Vernon Winfrey who was a barber. He was able to get her a local job in radio while she was still completing high school. Her first job was working at a local store. Oprah then went to Tennessee State University. Her early experience in the local radio job gave her great experience for what was coming next in her life.


When Oprah was working in the local media, she was the youngest news anchor and not only that, she was the first black female news anchor to work at WLAC-TV. After gaining more and more experience, Oprah then moved to Chicago to take a job as a host of a half an hour morning talk show. Her impact on the show was huge. She took it from last in the rating to first. She had just made the talk show the highest-rated talk show in Chicago. This is not the only thing that Oprah achieved. The show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey show and it increased from half an hour to a full hour. Oprah Winfrey was known for her intelligent and caring style however she had an aggressive tone when needed. As her career started progressing she started adding more bows to her string. She would now talk about more topics like race, spirituality and meditation. Despite her early success, her show did have some critics. As some would say she was promoting things that weren’t scientific fact and it could mislead people. Her popularity grew to the point where she could interview celebrities. In 1993, she had an interview with Micheal Jackson and it was so popular that it became the fourth most-watched event in American history, it gained an audience of 36.5 million people. She was recently part of an interview with Prince Harry and Meghan. They talked about the racism that they suffered during their time with the Royal family. Another popular interview was with shamed cyclist Lance Armstrong, as he admitted to her that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs for his career. Oprah Winfrey has had her fair share of celebrity interviews as she has interviewed Whitney Houston, Tom Cruise, Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Ferguson, Donald Trump, Rihanna, Barack Obama, and many more.

Personal Life

Oprah Winfrey has not got any children at the moment, her experiences as a child are one of the big reasons that have put her off having children. One of the things that surprise people is the fact that Oprah Winfrey has never been married. She has been with her long-toe partner Stedham Graham, they have been together since 1986. She isn’t associated with any political party. Oprah success is something that everyone should aspire to, not just women.
